  • No Dual OS version (you are stuck with what you what you buy either Windows 10 or Android)
  • Storage is a bit limited (you either have 16 GB or 64 GB) – no other choice
  • Buggy OS (upgrades needs a bit of work)
  • Upgrading to MIUI 7.5, some apps fail to work (resolve by sticking to MIUI 7.2)

Tablet Deals (updated)

Despite the rumors of Dual OS support, there are only two versions of Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 available. I already reviewed the Windows 10 version and you can check it out here (Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 Windows 10). I didn’t actually buy another tablet just to review it, I just flash it using Flashboot Method to Android, you can also check it out here (Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 convert to Android).

Why I switched to Android?

Simple, Windows 10 on the Mi Pad 2 really is boring, and honestly, performance is very sluggish. With the limited hardware, you basically have a low end laptop at your hand with just a nice screen.¬† Windows Store is also very limited in Apps and what exactly can you play on an Atom Cherry Trail Chipset? It can barely play the latest games, and thus, gaming isn’t really a great option. Anyway, I mainly use the tablet for Facebook, YouTube, Light Games like CoC, and thus, I think the Android System is better suited for it.

What improvements I’ve noticed?

Firstly, user experience is a lot better, although that is just my opinion, but the interface is much smoother, no sluggishness and frankly Android is the better fit for Atom Cherry Trail. The OS installed is MIUI 7.2 which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, the same OS on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 that have reviewed before. Because it is a Local Chinese ROM, there is no Playstore installed, so I had to manually install it and also there is quite a bit of Bloatware installed but just a minor inconvenience.

In terms of Gaming, I did only test 2 Games to test it’s performance. And i’ve noticed one of them with improve performance.

  1. Asphalt 8 – performance is much more playable compared to Windows 10
  2. Modern Combat  5 Рnot much has improved, still noticeable lags and slow downs
  3. Other games like CoC etc… work fine and are available to you on Android

Much better user experience, my true benchmark for Performance, I honestly am satisfied with the performance of the tablet, and even with only 2 GB RAM, still enough for the heavy users.

How about Battery life?

On Windows, relative battery test wasn’t really conclusive, I did manage about 4 to 5 hours. On Android, using Geekbench Battery Test, It was able to get 6 hours and 17 minutes of screen on time. This was achieved with about 25% brightness. The numbers are quite good and battery life is certainly one of the best asset of this tablet.

Personally think, Android is the better fit

In conclusion, Android system on this tablet is the better suited OS. I do see a lot of advantage on Android compared to Windows. Just basing on the limited hardware of the Tablet, Android offers much more… (you can refer to the video below)

But overall… How is the Android version of Xiaomi Mi Pad 2?

In terms of performance, it is definitely optimized and offers much better performance compared to the Windows 10 version. Unfortunately, it is still limited in performance because it only has 2 GB RAM on all models. Gaming is laggy especially on the Retina Screen. It is only good for low to moderate 3D intensive games like COC, Plants versus zombies etc… Games like Modern Combat 5, Asphalt 8 and other fast rendering games struggle. And this is also made worst with only 2 GB RAM, performance is actually slower compared to the Teclast X98 Plus, which had 4 GB RAM.

What is the main selling point of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 Android version?

It definitely is not in terms of gaming and performance. But more on the areas of All in one Multimedia, such as Web browsing, watching movies and light gaming. The Audio Quality of the loudspeakers and the 3.5mm Audio Jack is also excellent. Wireless performance is also great especially with the Dual Band WiFi support (one of the few tablets that actually support it).

So how does it compare to the actual iPad Mini?

Honestly, comparable only in terms of looks and Gorgeous Retina Screen. Also I think the Audio Quality and Wireless Performance is on Par.

So which one should you get?

Get the Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 Android version (64 GB) in a heartbeat. But if the Windows 10 version is cheaper, you can also easily flash it to windows.
