The new Onda V989 Air (ipad Air lookalike) is one of the first tablet to feature the new Allwinner A80 Octa Core processor. Boasting superb performance, said to achieve about 50000 plus points on Antutu Benchmark which is beyond of any other Soc available in the market can do. Furthermore, it also features a 28nm architecture and an advance Big.Little feature that allows better battery management.

Languages Supported: English, Afrikaans, Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu, Bosanki, Catala, Cestina, Dansk, Deutsch, Eesti, Espanol, Filipino, French, Hrvatski, IsiZulu, Italiano, kiswahili, Latviesu, Lietuviu, Magyar, Nederlands, Norsk, Polish, Portuguese, Romana, Rumantsch, Slovencina, Slovenscina, Suomi, Svenska, Vietnamese, Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian, Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Urdu, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Thai, Cambodian, Bengali, Korean, Japanese, Simplified/Traditional Chinese

In terms of gaming, the new hardware also comes with a revamped PowerVR G6320 graphics processor which can easily handle even the most intensive 3D Games available in the market. It also supports 4K Video Playback via Mini HDMI Port. Other features include a 2 GB DDR3 RAM and variants of either 16/32 GB internal storage expandable up to 128GB via Micro SD Support. The tablet also runs the latest Android 4.4 Kitkat right out of the box with multilingual support, see above.

The V989 just like other predecessor tablets like the V875m, comes with a similar 9.7 inch, Retina IPS Display which is said to be comparable to the iPad Air or Ipad 4 in terms of image performance. The name itself is a clue to what the tablet is inspired.

Unfortunately, Connectivity is limited to Wi-Fi, 3G network is also made possible via 3G dongle. There is also a lack of GPS and Compass support. Other additions include Miracast or Wireless Display (allows you to broadcast or link to other capable devices via Wifi Connection), and Mini HDMI support that allows 4K or 4096 x 2160 pixel video output.

Design and Battery, the tablet comes with a decent size 7000mAh battery, however, considering the new hardware, a 10000mAh would have been a better fit. Most 9.7 inch tablets have bigger capacity batteries to accommodate the higher demands. In terms of design, Onda has been a keen follower of the iPad design, it employs a Unibody design which makes it ultra thin and the Aluminum Back shell takes close consideration to the look of iPad Air.

Overall, the new Onda V989 Air is not just fast, its also good looking tablet. Being a lookalike or a clone does have its advantage. One major gripe of the device is the lack of 4G or LTE connectivity. However, the cheap price point for a Retina Tablet does compensate this shortcoming.

  1. SIr Vince,

Thank you very much for your recommendation. I just want to ask your feedback regarding Teclast P983G and Cube talk 9x. which is better or can you recommend.

    More Power!

  2. There are two different V989s out there. The V989 runs on the A80 processor and is a very strong tablet. The V989 Air runs on the A83T processor and is a cheaper, less powerful, version. Your review seems to combine the two models.
