Guide: How to convert Xiaomi Mi Air 12 or 13 to English Windows 10

This is the guide I used to change my Xiaomi Mi Air 12 Chinese Windows 10 to English version.

This guide will work on both the Xiaomi Mi Air 12 and 13. But I did used this this on my Mi Air 12. The guide actually is a short revision from the Xiaomi community.

The original source is here, but I did have a different experience, so I am also sharing it here. If you have the same issues as mine, please share this simple guide.

  • This guide is a “Clean Install” of English version of 64 bit Windows 10 Home Edition (Single Language), not an upgrade
  • Unfortunately, you cannot use the product key from the Chinese version for English, so it is not activated. Tried on mine many times and failed (to activate)

What you need first:

  • At least 8 GB of Free USB Disk
  • 64 bit Windows 10 Home Edition SL (Single Language) installer (iso form)
  • Mi Notebook battery at least 70% or Fully charge
  • Mi Notebook Air Drivers. You can visit here (Xiaomi Mi Air 12 Drivers) – you can choose driver integration package (1 GB)

Step 1 (Another PC)

  1. Use another  PC with English Windows 10, because using the Chinese version will also download the Chinese version
  2. Download Windows 10 installer: go here (select 64 bit Windows 10 Home Edition SL – Single Language)
  3. Save this as an ISO File

Step 2 (Xiaomi Mi Air 12)

  1. On your Xiaomi Mi Air 12 or 13, go to command (cmd) and type wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey(without the quotations), to get the product key.
  2. Keep this key for later use

Step 3: (USB Disk)

  1. Make a bootable disk. On mine, i used RUFUS 2.0 and the settings i used are for UEFI.
  2. After successfully making a bootable disk

Step 4: (Xiaomi Mi Air 12)

  1. Power down. Turn on and quickly spam F2 to go to BIOS.
  2. Go to Boot
  3. Go to Boot Device Order
  4. Choose EFI USB Device, reboot and proceed with Installation.

Another case here:

  • If the USB disk cannot be seen just like what happened to me.
  • What I did was change it to legacy and reboot
  • Now it will automatically boot on the USB Disk
  • You can change the BIOS settings after

Step 5: Windows 10 Installation

On the Installation Page, you cannot delete just one partition and install it. Because you will get an error:

ERROR “Windows cannot be installed because it has a gipt blah blah…

The only way to correct this is to delete all partitions

Now continue with the installation

You can attempt to activate the key if it can be activated. If not, you need to purchase it unfortunately.

Walla!!! It’s done, you now have a English version of Windows 10 on your Xiaomi Mi Air 12. But there is still a catch. Hope this short guide is helpful.

    1. Hello Bravo,

switch it to legacy and restart, I think this is a bug, I couldn’t see on my installation either. After the installation, remove your USB Drive and switch it back to UEFI

      Best Regards,

    1. Hello Bayu,

I think that is also an option because it is changed to legacy option. Make sure, your DVD is detected

      Best Regards,

  1. be aware that this method doesn’t work. your old productKey will not be able to activate the English version of windows 10.

    1. Hello gzmask,

It is a disclaimer, I already said that the product key of the Chinese version doesn’t work on the English version

      Best Regards,

  2. I got a clean Windows 10 installation activated twice with a cheap Windows 7 key from ebay. Obviously the cost free update policy for Windows 10 of Microsoft still is valid.

  3. Hi

I switched the boot to legacy boot, but I’m getting a error when I turn the machine on. “No bootable device – insert boot disk and press any key”. I now can’t get into the bios, it just goes straight this this error message. HELP!

  4. Hi

I switched the boot to legacy boot, but I’m getting a error when I turn the machine on. “No bootable device – insert boot disk and press any key”. I now can’t get into the bios, it just goes straight this this error message. HELP!

    1. Hello james

Restart and then insert a bootable windows 10 disk. It will automatically boot on your USB. Make sure, you only insert the Bootdrive, don’t use a USB Hub on this.

      Best Regards,

      1. Hi Vince – I have tried that but it doesn’t work. I didn’t swap the boot order, so I don’t think it is recognising the usb drive. Is there anything I can do? Or is the laptop broken?

        1. It is not broken because it is only affected on the Software side, I actually had that issue before.

          1. is the Chinese Windows 10 still intact? meaning not deleted?
          2. Turn off your notebook, hold power button for shut down, then rapidly press f2 or del on the keyboard to go to bios

          Best regards,

          1. Yes the Chinese version is intact. The problem is I can’t get into the bios I have tried getting into 100’s of times using F2 and del, but doesn’t work. Not sure what else to try.

    1. Do you have a bootable Windows 10 USB?

You can plug it in and allow it to finish installing. Or upgrade maybe to Windows 10 Pro.

    1. I encountered this issue before, and it seems to be related to how you make your bootable disk. Sometimes it doesn’t read the USB Stick, have u tried using another stick for it. or perhaps an external disk drive and insert your installer for windows 10.

      1. Hi Vince – just tried another USB with windows and managed to access the bios. That’s for all your help, much appreciated. Thanks again. James

    1. Hello Pleunie,

Unfortunately, if the partitions are already deleted, it cannot be retrieved.

      Best Regards,
